Many people are under the mistaken impression that getting citizenship after a requisite period of residency is a mere formality.

Absolutely not.

There are a myriad of other issues and eligibility criteria that can and do stymie a naturalization application based on a period of residency, even if that is a “golden visa” residency.

Part of this misconception can be blamed on some (not all) on golden visa salesmen (who masquerade as “consultants”) eager to close the sale. They speak as if it’s all but a forgone conclusion that you’ll be a citizen after X number of years.

BTW, Bukele’s residency by investment program in El Salvador should be viewed with the same caution if it ever comes into existence.

Don’t take citizenship after a period of residency as a given if you pursue a “golden visa” (residence by investment). Even if your aim is eventual citizenship, understand there are serious risks to your naturalization eligibility.

I’ll write an article fleshing out the risks soon.
