To keep it backwards compatible with LNURL. My email works with both and the B prefix is optional.
I don't like the B prefix. I don't even know how to type it.

Me neither, I don't get why you'd want a hard character to type in this string

Yeah I'm not convinced either. You don't have to type it because wallets have to parse with or without it.
