Love when companies open source. But if they do it conditionally it's an indication they're smart more than they're ethical. Google keeps Chromium open source for leverage, because they understand the influence it gives them over other companies and the web. Facebook is just behind the curve and waking up to it.

yeah, I think corporate open source is often about “commodi⁣tiz⁣ing your com⁣ple⁣ment” as Joel Spolsky put it and Gwern summarized:

"foster⁣ing so much com⁣pe⁣ti⁣tion in an⁣other layer above or below its layer that no com⁣pet⁣ing mo⁣nop⁣o⁣list can emerge”

at least it's in quotation marks since it's borrowed -

Agree

Meta is still gay

i think there are different conversations happening here about "open source" and it's meaning. software open source access and open source data is and should not be the same reference as open-sourcing the data you use and provide as your own as a stakeholder masquerading as a proof of work model. if you're tuned in to the open source that does not make you "open source" that makes you a miner and a thief. some variations on a theme used by profiteers to maximize their leverage over their validation chains and hostages.

prob strategic, but a nice side-effect that it creates net-benefit for the world
