Is there a way to extract the epub file from a kindle device/app? I want to convert it into a pdf but it seems like all the ebook options that are sold only work on the seller's native app. It's all fucking closed ecosystems where you don't own anything.

EPUB actually is an open format. I believe it can be locked down, but EPUBs are available in an unencrypted non-DRM fashion.

Not sure if you can extract them from an Amazon device. It may be possible.

If your ethical guidelines would allow it, you could also see if this library has an EPUB copy of the book you already own.

It’s not there

Pretty sure Amazon kindle doesn't use epub. Many years ago there was software that could convert their format to epub but would be very unsurprised if that is no longer possible.

Calibre

Amazon uses a couple that are easily convertible any which way with Calibre

Right. So still works then? That's cool.

Absolutely works brilliant

I also Calibre-web docker for accessing books when kindle not in hand.

What’s calibre?

If you’re in to reading ebooks this is important to have

https://calibre-ebook.com/

But what does it do?

Or an ebook reader, ebook management, and most importantly ebook converter. Take any format and make it another. For example epub to something kindle can open

Which book are you looking to export as a pdf?

https://archive.org/ is where I find most of the books that I download as PDFs.

It’s not there and it’s a pretty old book

How old? Gutenberg? Maybe an international Gutenberg site?

Like 9 or 10 years old

Which book are you looking for?

Calibre with dedrm plugin. You might need to hunt down an older version of the Kindle app to download so that it downloads with outdated DRM.

In case it's helpful, try just downloading it from another source. Anna's Archive has been my savior a few times. https://annas-archive.org/
