I would say that when you substitute a person (as in a cult) for a doctrine - for which there is a special class of priesthood who dictate to the society, that it may well not satisfy the definition of the word "cult", but I suspect you would agree that both cults and authoritarian systems are essentially the same except for scale.

Whether the symbol is a man or a bunch of marks on a recording medium, it's idol worship.
