Talented coders are truly remarkable people - coding is much more of an art than a science. Yes, there's the "technical" pieces and all the syntax and such that has to be correct--but the essence of code is creativity--being able to create a vision out of nothing.
And that creativity--the art of coding--is what has always impressed me. Remarkable stuff--
But, like all art, it looks easy because of all of the practice.
That's the part other people don't see.
Good coders are hard workers.
I think of them as craftsmen or tradesmen.
You don't just wake up one day, as an expert welder or carpenter or farmer. It's the same with developers.
You wouldn't call yourself a welder if you didn't regularly weld something.
You shouldn't call yourself a developer unless you regularly develop something.
LOL - good coders are RELENTLESS workers (well, like all artists really). Part of that is loving what you do--and if you do, it's easy to put in the hours.
The corollary of course is that if you don't love it (be it coding or any other endeavor) then it's just a "job" -- and you'll also then never be really good at it.
And unfortunately that describes so many--working 9-5 at something they don't love, and being only average at best.
Well, I really hate coding, but I have to do it sometimes, anyway, so I guess I'll go do some, now.
