I have it on good authority (a drunk vetrinarian/lecturer) that if you are going to get a dog, you should get a small one that is a cross between as many breeds as possible - A total mutt. These are the healthiest dogs, they live the longest, and you will have the least total expenditure on vet bills, food, etc.

You got the "small" part right.

My oldest living dog was mini-me's Philly Pitt. She lived to the age of 17 and had a really good quality of life until she was just over 16. The last few months were touch and go.
