I liked it because it was the closest to where I lived at the time and more often sunny than other areas of the city.

Does sunlight really so differ in that area within walking distance? Or is it about buildings and other city elements cutting your sunlight in non park areas

The city has microclimates. You can really walk from one side of the city to the other. The mission district is the sunnier side of town.
