Wally Froiseth (1919–2015) was a pioneering figure in the evolution of big-wave surfing and surfboard design.

Born on December 21, 1919, in Los Angeles, he moved to Hawaii at the age of three and began surfing in Waikiki during his youth.

In the late 1930s, seeking better control on larger waves, Froiseth and fellow surfers developed the “hot curl” surfboard. This design featured a V-shaped tail, allowing the board to hold a better line on steep wave faces, which was instrumental in advancing big-wave surfing.

Froiseth was among the first surfers to challenge the formidable waves of Makaha on Oahu’s west shore in the 1930s. His ventures into these uncharted waters laid the groundwork for future big-wave exploration.

In 1948, he co-founded the Waikiki Surf Club, fostering a community for surfers and promoting the sport’s growth. Beyond surfing, Froiseth contributed to Hawaii’s maritime heritage by assisting in the construction of the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa and serving on the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s board.

Froiseth passed away on June 29, 2015, at his home in Kaimuki, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly influenced surfing culture and big-wave riding.
