Has anyone running a large relay publicized the financial realities of operating? Would love to see if it’s out there.

Love that question 🙋‍♂️

According to Damus dev nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s it’s just HTTP so it’s prob cheap. I recommend Raspberry Pi at home.

nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s said earlier today that he just had a $600 VPS bill for the Damus relay. Presume that’s monthly?

Probably the highest traffic relay on the network at the moment.

I'm running wss://nostr.oxtr.dev with a total monthly cost of only 40 EUR. It works fine but it's not the fastest one out there by any means. The nostr-rs-relay software is pretty CPU heavy. I could easily scale up to make it faster but that would probably put the monthly costs to something between 350-500 EUR a month (for a VPS with a dedicated vCPU) with >=32 vCPU cores. That's too much for me too keep up without charging people for it.

I'd imagine the Damus relay is pretty resource heavy and costly to run.

That’s way cheaper than I imagined.
