E4 mafia runs the fucking Army, but if you never made at least E5 before you got out, you're kind of a shitbag.

Damn.. YMMV in the military. I made it to Corporal in the USMC but that’s not even close to possible for most. There are only so many billets. I guess the branches differ.
Yeah making E4 in the Marine corps is a big deal. Most E4s in the Army are Specialists, which means their not NCOs. More like super privates. There are some corporal E4s in the Army. I was a corporal for a few months before I made E5, because I was filling an E5 position as an E4.
