She was mixed up - it was the Irish who were not considered white, or white enough, because of British prejudices. The Irish were always fighting the Italians in gangs like 120 years ago. So that weird prejudice is kind of attached to the Italians by association, in the US.

But it's only a historical thing - I've never heard of either Irish or Italians being discriminated against
