"Bernie was a formal presidential elector for the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party in 1980. Most of America in 1980 was choosing between Jimmy Carter or Ronald Reagan. Not Bernie, he chose the SWP. He was smart enough not to join the party (as far as we know), so he could run for office as an “Independent.” But he was and is a longtime supporter of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party. "
