"Choiceless awareness", is the silent and choiceless observation of "what IS", which simply means being aware of one's own thoughts, feelings, emotions, sensations, perceptions and actions from moment to moment.

Choiceless awareness is a state of unpremeditated, complete awareness of the present without preference, effort and/or compulsion.

Thus, on a certain day . . .

A student asked his Zen master:

"O master, what is the choice we must make to be aware and conscious?"

The master replied with a gentle smile:

"The choiceless choice is to simply Be,

To be aware, to be present and to be free."

The student, puzzled, asked again:

"But how can there be a choice without a choice?"

The master answered:

"The choiceless choice is like the sky,

It just is, it holds everything, it doesn't ask why."

The student still confused, asked yet again:

"But how do we make this choiceless choice?"

The master replied:

"By letting go of all that distracts,

By being still, by being mindful,

By being non-attached. . . The meditative state from moment to moment.

The student, now in awe, bowed to the master:

"I understand, O wise one, the choiceless choice, Is to surrender, to Be and to rejoice."
