Why on earth would they sell an asset for fiat that they just print?

Because history repeats itself
The same thing happened in Germany during the fall of the Mark after WW1.
Germany was throwing good money at bad trying desperately to prop up their currency valuation.
While the situation with USD is nowhere near as dire (yet), human hubris and greed is universal in that sense. Fed desperately holding onto their perceived sense of monetary power to their own eventual detriment.
Because they’re selling it to buddies or themselves at cut rate.
Do we actually have a proof that they really did that?

It was in court filings. Apparently they plan to sell the remainder in 4 batches.
