Chinese electric-vehicle battery maker CATL is reportedly in discussions with Tesla and other unnamed automakers to license its battery technology in the U.S. instead of building its own plant there. The Wall Street Journal reports that the scale of cooperation and the specific technology that Tesla would license from CATL are still being negotiated. CATL's existing partnership with Ford Motor will serve as a model for similar collaborations with other U.S. carmakers. Ford had previously scaled back its investment in its Michigan battery plant and opted to produce low-cost lithium-iron batteries based on technology licensed from CATL.
