You’re in the only 1st world country that forces you to make that gamble.
The real cost of healthcare is X.
The cost of privatized healthcare is 1.3X. That’s 30% profit you have to pay the insurance industry for the privilege of having healthy children.
Admission:
I cut health insurance 3 years ago. I am now self-insured. I know that the cost of insured healthcare is 30% more than the actual cost. The Insurance industry has many actuaries that calculated that (insuring me + profits = $380ish/mo). So if I save 30% less than 380, that should cover me.
Insurance is the second most successful marketing ploy after diamond rings. Everybody “knows” that you have to have health insurance. And yet, everybody can do simple math.
That’s the scam. You have to max it out and pay through the nose, and if you ever decide to scale back, that’s precisely when the trip to the ER happens.
Even better is after that happens, you max the coverage for next year. And no one gets hurt. Rinse and repeat.
