Crocodiles are one of the oldest living species on Earth, dating back to the Late Cretaceous period, about 94 million years ago. They are the closest living relatives of birds, and they have survived several mass extinctions that wiped out many other animals. Some branches though did not survive, such as the various vegetarian crocodiles discovered by scientists recently.
