This new deepseek model is huge news.

About 18 months ago, before I'd even bothered to play with these LLMs, my take on this new AI LLM wave was that, unlike e.g. money technologies, open source's success is absolutely inevitable in this field. This tech is not very sticky. I can switch from ClosedAI to Llama to deepseek any time I like. Rent seeking with these algos is incredibly fragile.

I had absolutely no idea though, that this would be led by first facebook, and then Chinese companies controlled by the CCP 🤯

Pretty huge detail that counters 'open source eats the world' narratives: the *hardware* is limited, expensive and hugely specialized.

Been using it today to see if I can actually deploy various things for work

Its very impressive

There are reasons to be optimistic about decentralized AI countering the rise in powerful, centralized AI systems [1]. We need more people working on it though.

The model the big players are going with right now is to spend a lot of money and resources training and releasing high quality free models so that it’s uneconomical for companies to compete. The Chinese models are a subsidized retaliation for the chip sanctions. It’s part of the digital war between the two large economies.

People racing to use these models “in the cloud” are inadvertently training them and giving them an advantage that new entrants won’t have.

Perhaps nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx is funding a decentralized AI project through OpenSats? If not there’s a great opportunity.

Good chance that the CCP is spending government funds subsidizing deepseek to kill off US AI companies.

Open source is _why_ this is plausible. Open source has always required a ton of investment. Machines building LLM models isn't _that_ different than the usual armies of paid programmers writing OSS code.

Without question.

Additionally, it was no coincidence that all of this development out of #China came the very week “Stargate” was announced.

That was the “tell” of Chinas intentions. And the level of geopolitical trolling … you just have to respect it.
