Soon it will be primitive weapons deer season.

My Louisiana Legal weapon of choice is the New England Arms 12 gauge single barrel shotgun with exposed hammer and 3" chamber.

I modified mine for this singular purpose.

Cut the barrel to 19". Recrowned the muzzle. Replied the exposed metal. Installed a Hyviz front sight. Added sling swivels and a hand made Paracord sling. This gun has no recoil pad. It weighs 4 lbs.

Once I took a wild hog at 100 measured meters.

3" magnum 1oz slug pushing 3,250 flbs muzzle energy.

It was an early autum morning. The weather was cool enough for a bright orange sweatshirt. I was hunting the local National Forest. Been in the woods a few hours slowly stalking the trails through semi open forest. The White Oak Acorns littered the forest floor. A large shadow caught my eye. Was that a bear? I asked myself. I stood stock still watching it move through tall grass. It was a few minutes watching I saw the smaller pigs come out of the brush. Hogs.

This was a huge boar. At least 800 lbs. I had not intention of shooting it because I could not carry it out of the forest. I targeted what I though was a small pig. Lifted the single barrel shotgun to my shoulder and slowly squeezed the trigger.

OMG. All hell broke loose. The squeals of many pigs, and thump of feet everywhere. Like cockroaches in a HUD Home when the lights come on. The pigs were everywhere. I stood against a large tree. Not moving.

After the noise settled and the pigs had returned to hiding, I moved toward my target.

There it was laying in the leaves on the forest floor. This hog had teeth. Tusks that turned up from the lower and upper jaw. 4" in length and sharp enough to open up a leg or belly with that muscle behind it. It was alive. My shot had severed the spine midway. I loaded another 3" slug and aimed at its neck. Boom, the hog was down.

I took it to the local meat processor. They weighed the undressed hog at 312lbs.

Bacon, chops, loin and ribs. The rest ground as sausage. Good stuff.

I have an extensive collection of firearms, all types. The little single barrel is my go to gun for varmints and primitive hunting. Light, fast, short enough for tight places. For home defense the Mossberg 590A1 Shockwave is beside my bed and ready for action.
