Yes, I drape them with insect mesh and use pegs to close the gaps. I find that the bushes can handle that. With bird netting the berries get tangled so you'd need a cage around it. I doubt there would be any to harvest if not covered. Blackbirds eat them green. Literally the day after covering them, having not seen a single berry turning prior, there was plenty of purple to be seen.
You literally already said re-cover! Doh. I like the insect mesh the stretchy stuff tangles the birds feet so it does need to be tight on a frame. was going to harvest gooseberries today but it's hammering down with rain so will process the 5kg blackberries we got yesterday and red currants from last week...and rhubarb 😬

I mostly have them with other berries and yoghurt, honeycomb, bee pollen. They last surprisingly long in the fridge so between that and giving them out to family I get through them no problem.
They're one of my favourite berries but have only tasted supermarket so far
