Here we go, no time like the present! A massive blueberry harvest from just three bushes. This was the second big harvest and there could have been a third smaller one but I decided not to re-cover, so the blackbirds will have the rest. And the biggest watermelon I've ever grown, I hope it ripens!

Wow that's amazing! Did you have to net them? Didn't get any fruit from the uncovered red currant bush, but it bring birds to the garden feeders so that's ok

Yes, I drape them with insect mesh and use pegs to close the gaps. I find that the bushes can handle that. With bird netting the berries get tangled so you'd need a cage around it. I doubt there would be any to harvest if not covered. Blackbirds eat them green. Literally the day after covering them, having not seen a single berry turning prior, there was plenty of purple to be seen.

You literally already said re-cover! Doh. I like the insect mesh the stretchy stuff tangles the birds feet so it does need to be tight on a frame. was going to harvest gooseberries today but it's hammering down with rain so will process the 5kg blackberries we got yesterday and red currants from last week...and rhubarb 😬

What will you do with the blueberries?

Have dmd

I mostly have them with other berries and yoghurt, honeycomb, bee pollen. They last surprisingly long in the fridge so between that and giving them out to family I get through them no problem.

They're one of my favourite berries but have only tasted supermarket so far
