Very understandable. I use it because I have made it a habbit to myself to do so and because it is kinda like the "last sane place i have left". o.o
- Twitter? Dying, rotting, imploding.
- Reddit? Most of the cool peeps grabbed their stuff and went to Lemmy/kbin.
- Discord? Partially owned by Tencent. Not the worst, but definitively not the best way to communicate.
- Matrix? I like it a lot and use it daily, but it unfortunately has a good amount of flaws. Look at how unable they are to solve sync and even need a sliding sync proxy now o.o...
- Telegram? Eh... I used to trust it a lot because the outline seemed very private and secure, but this has gone to shambles to some degree and it is now massively being used for stuff I don't agree with. Like, I don't even know how much Telegram has "complied" with law enforcement at this point.
- Signal, Session? Got nobody on there. I managed to migrate the most important people to Telegram off WhatsApp (mainly because of their ToS changes and Facebook shenanigans that gave me an amazing foundation to do so)
- Instagram, Tiktok? I use both of them to message people that I can no longer message on Twitter, since DMs are effectively a pay-feature now unless two people follow each other, which can't always be managed and mandated if one of the parties *needs* a clean account. Say, Melleefresh (EDM DJ); she can't follow me and others because it would clutter up her feed. Insta and Tiktok still allow this kind of messaging, so its ... an option. But I dont like either of them. :/
Nostr is what's left and the stuff built off of it is genuely amazing and I plan to do the same! But it's bitcoin-closeness and the thus associated stigmata are a pain to work around. Though I did find a good way to explain Lightning as Twitch Bits, and showing my friends how I converted my sats to a prepaid masterCard that I could then use to buy stuff in Genshin Impact did impress them; From Crypto, to Euro, to in-game stuff. Granted, that was a LOT of KYC and I need a better alternative. x.x
