Got the other two portable compost bins planted with daikon radish seeds. Now i'll wait for the sprouts to shoot up. The chickens are loving the tiny one i made for this purpose. #grownostr #homesteading #chickens #permies

I love daikon!
Good work! 💪🏻
You say "portable compost bin" but how does this compost with it being in the open air? I was wondering is this meant for the chick to have a dust bath in? I have tried making designated dust bath (DDB) areas before, but sadly my girls make random holes wherever they seem to want. LOL I've learned ot deal with it HAHA!
I keep my compost piles open, all of them including my two large ones. For these small ones, they are in the chicken run (see my previous post about this). I will feed the sprouts to them, then eventually move the container and let the chickens go thru it. Will move them around the whole run eventually. Not sure what you mean about covering them, i have never covered a compost pile, and they work fine.
Looooooooooove Dikes! Have just finished eating all of our pickled Daikon, absolutely eyeying off a new patch for some babies. 🥰
How long does it take to get your compost to a usable state?
Well i'm not sure. I have two large piles, and i continuously add material to them. When i need some compost i just dig some out. I dont pay attention to the timing. Basically, if it looks good, i use it, so i dont get too scientific about it.
I started a brand new pile in a trash can with holes last week. I hoping it didn't take too long.
