I think you're right that most companies probably don't start out wanting to be a tool for authoritarians, but due to the way that technology infrastructure and popularity of services has come about, it's now an easy leap to go in that direction, whether forced or accidentally (gradually over time). Nostr and Bitcoin allow users to take back some control.
