Yesterday at work, I met an electrician, and we started chatting. Because of my accent, he asked, ‘Are you German?’ I said no but mentioned I could speak German. His response? ‘I don’t like Germans because of what they did in WWII.’
It caught me off guard—judging an entire people for the crimes of their past. Later, I wondered why I didn’t ask him what he thought about the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
It’s strange how some historical atrocities are remembered with outrage, while current ones are ignored or justified.
Collective guilt is wrong.
