The US is stuck in a suffering relationship. The US needs to politically fight to fix the problems they face. There are too many resources on the table to divide up (Nukes, Armies, etc). Any state, county, or city that Secessed loses big time. They'll lose almost all their resources. I think it's an all-or-nothing situation.
Secession is almost certainly the best, of a bunch of bad choices left to us today. Theoretically, different states or counties could vote to secede and create their own nations or join with others to form a nation that stands for their beliefs. The US is no longer a melting pot. It is now multiple groups with irreconcilable differences.
