To be fair, most parents will do this if their children are starving, regardless of political persuasion. The part I have an issue with is even when times are good, they still feel this way. That is the part that is NOT normal.

Doing some math, you will find a 10 year old on 50% calorific intake will enter famine type starvation after around 6 weeks because their metabolisms are much faster than adults.
Parents are getting seriously concerned after about 4 weeks.
