Tried to sign into a work related account for an urgent issue

Entered password

Clicked "Get a verification code at ************23"

Entered the phone number to verify the phone to get the verification code SMS on the phone

Entered the verification code

Told to open the Gmail app on the phone and tap number 7 on the phone

Did that

"You've tried to sign in too many times. For your protection, you can't sign in right now"

For my protection!

Not your keys = not your data = a complete fucking waste of time
