I try to connect with people and they try to connect with me (reluctantly).
Yesterday I spoke with A computer science doctorate candidate and he said that he knew very little about the Unix/ Linux shell.
He currently teaches highschool computer science...
Teach your children at home.
You have to use it, then you will learn it. Just start using shell and understanding commands when you need them.

I've met more doctors who ask me for advice than I'd like to mention.
Doctorite or PhD doesn't mean they know everything, just a deep dive on a topic at one time....
