According to Samuel Adams to truly be free there has to be no Congress or Parliament or state or provincial legislature over you, telling you what to do and extracting your wealth...

In the American Revolution, the patriots thought they would be free if they just got rid of the king and set up their own States. But they just replaced the old boss with new bosses, and recreated the problem...
All forms of governance fall to human nature. This was not unknown or unacknowledged by them.
The goal was to set up a system that would balance that.
Did it ultimately work? I think history will disagree, but basic human nature tends to overrule even the best laid plans.
