Beware of scammers, trust no one.
I want to share a story that serves as a stark reminder of the importance of self-custody and security in the world of Bitcoin. Recently, someone I know received a phone call from a scammer posing as a representative from Crypto(.)com. The caller provided her own security code and asked her to forward account recovery emails to gain access to her account.
In a moment of vulnerability, she complied, thinking she was resolving an issue. It wasn’t until the scammer realized the account was empty that the tone changed. The scammer then asked for her 12-word recovery phrase.
When she called me for help, she was understandably distressed and felt uncomfortable with the technical aspects. I told her to stop everything and not engage further with the scammer. I advised her to report the incident to the police and secure her other accounts. Thankfully, her account was empty, and she didn’t lose any funds.
This experience is a wake-up call for all of us. Scammers are out there, and they’re getting more sophisticated. **Self-custody is crucial**. Always be vigilant, trust your instincts, and never share your security information with anyone. Protect yourself, because in this digital age, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
