After studying American polling, Emery and Trist concluded that “people behave according to consensus.” People are so directed and influenced by polls that “they wouldn´t dare break this social contract: they must do what others perceive that they should do; to do otherwise would cause psychological pain.” They conclude that polls, “give meaning to their lives.”
