-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

History of Surfboard Wax

Origins (1940s–1950s):

Before commercial surf wax existed, surfers used paraffin wax, which was readily available as a household item (used for canning jars). It provided grip but would often melt off in warmer waters and wasn’t very effective.

1960s: The Birth of Surf Wax as a Product

Hap Jacobs Wax (1960s)

In 1965, Mr. Zog’s Sex Wax was created—one of the first waxes specifically designed for surfboards.

Around the same time, other brands like Sticky Bumps, Mrs. Palmers, and Fu Wax emerged.

These formulas were made using blends of paraffin wax, beeswax, and other additives to improve grip, temperature performance, and texture.
