Do I still have to worry about the electronic meter reader installed just outside on my bedroom wall?
That's beyond my knowledge. But my rule of thumb is that you're not in danger of electricity unless you're in a high voltage switching yard and you're not in danger of radiation unless you're in a nuclear meltdown.
Yes, they're known to lead to bills. I'm tempted to mess with mine by inducing emf at various frequencies, see if I can get it to crash :-p
