#[2] do you think NIP-05 is a must have? Somehow I didn't do it, because I think as anyone can do it, does not give or provide any guarantee at the end. So I don't see the value in it. What is your opinion?
Discussion
I think NIP-05 aliases are far from being a must have!
Some people with personal registered domains may find it useful to add a domain alias to their pubkey.
Or maybe in a Company it could be useful as a way to announce their official pubkey.
But I don't see any value on it for the normal user.
I even think assigning a checkmark in the UI to every user with a defined NIP-05 alias is misleading and helping the spammers and scammers.
Thank you!
Also at the moment it is quite easy to copy accounts, because you can give exactly the same names for your pubkey as another account, and noone is really checking the pubkey.
So this "verified" status can help even more to mislead people.
So fully agree with your point!

The only value it does have for normies is, as #[0] pointed out, it makes it easier to give someone your contact.
"Hey how can I add you on nostr?"
"My pubkey is npub..." vs "Just add me@domain.com"
Dunno... I'm not convinced of that.
- In real life, it seems easier to use QR scan to add a new contact.
- In virtual space, it looks similar to copy-paste a npub than a domain name, imo.
Right now it is a strong signal that you are legit (almost all spam is _not_ NIP-05 verified). If it is from a legit domain, even more so. NIP-05 domain operators have some motivation to not verify spam accounts. I don't expect to see spam being a problem from nostrpurple.com, for example.
But there are good people without NIP-05 verification. Are they being filtered out?
damn it! I said verification. I meant "without a NIP-05 mapped domain"
For my relay, I have higher rate limits for nip-05 pubkeys. It is just one signal among many and reduces false-positive spam hits; I would very much like to keep things open for any non-abusive account, regardless of nip-05. I do monitor the rejected events, and am fairly confident I only kick out spam (as defined by me).
