> this community idea is a bit dumb

you mean how the approval stuff works? agree that it is setup a bit retardedly. i get wanting approvals to prevent bot spam/trolls but then the fact that the site offers practically NO configuration of any kind and just makes mods approve 100% of everything by hand is super lame. Gotta be a lot worse in communities that don't have people like MOB at least setting up a stop gap solutions.

But the whole site ui/ux here is kind of half-assed imo (at least if accessing thru the website). tags is more of a twitter-concept i think and i'm not really against the idea but i'd rather it work like reddit/lemmy. but even in the lemmy/reddit concepts list, i'd like to see things like sticky posts, expand/collapse on nested comments, block/hide/mute users, something to see the \# of comments per post when in the sub looking thru all posts, etc. And the navigation kind of sucks too. No bookmarkable pages for user subbed communities.. instead you have to load main page and then click a tab and then wait to load a list and scroll thru it.

anyway, i've heard amethyst or whatever has slightly better ui/ux but i don't use android apps cuz i fall into the ultra paranoid category of security fanatics (more that i dont trust android itself - i havent even looked at the app). and haven't had time to really look at desktop clients much yet. sounds like this month is going to be crazy busy for me too so i don't expect i'll find the time soon.

you need to mention what app you are using?

yes i think amethyst is best so far and also dont trust android or its apps but its what most of the world uses so they will need an app on it for #nostr

yes the approval aspect of #communities is not good, it should be something you opt into but also we already have #tags for topics, to me its duplication of existing features, this has happened with chat too

as for #spam #amethyst has a really effective way to handle that, as such i hardly see any, it can be improved tho as to use it well you need a large follow list which fucks that feed, so it would be better to have different lists nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z

currently, i'm not using an app; i'm just hitting the website in firefox directly. mostly cuz i know how to setup a vpn securely on linux so that it doesn't leak ip address via dns and know how to lock down desktop firefox so that ip doesn't leak via webrtc, etc. somebody just viewing or making idle comments probably doens't need to worry too much but i post a fair bit of things that trigger libs, especially the troons, so gotta make sure they cant doxx me lol

on android, i can either do vpn OR firewall (i want both). there's some convoluted workarounds that let you get both via a socks proxy but seems like a pain in the ass and might cause issues with some other stuff i use on my phone. mobile browsers are usually harder to lock down the webrtc leaks in (can do it with addons but not sure i trust those to never fail at any level). i haven't reviewed any nostr client code to see if they use webrtc or anything else that could pose a privacy risk, so even if i did get the firewall+vpn thing working, there could still potentially be leaks. not trying to say "android bad" per se, just that it pisses me off that i can't do shit there that I can do very easily in linux.

one option i plan on looking into if i ever get enough free time and energy is desktop client apps. there's at least 5 of them on linux (i think a few were crossplatform with windows/mac too). only one i remember the name of off the top of my head is called 'gossip'. but i haven't looked at which (if any) of them support communities, what other features they have, etc yet. was also wanting to write a firejail profile (or maybe bubblewrap?) to lock them down even further.

sorry, getting tired. just occurred to me that the above probably sounds like techobabble to more than a few folks here and since i can't edit..

let's just say that i'm super paranoid about privacy/security. so i have been avoiding android apps cuz i'm not sure how to set things up over there to the degree i'd be confident that triggered woketards wouldnt be able to doxx me. i think i can do it on linux but haven't had time to fuck around with the setup yet so i'm just roughing it in the browser for now

you could use a router with a vpn, there is also ungoogled android variants

websites are apps to me

It needs some work. We could also create a ui that combines hash tags and nostr communities to get better experience. The reason I made the approval bot is dart was I'm wondering if I could make a new ui in flutter for nostr communities to handle some of this stuff better. You could have the app itself crowd source approving. For example, set the app to auto approve your communities if you have it open.

Being more decentralized to present a few new problems but they are interesting if they can be solved.

definitely. i probably not going to have much free time over the next 2-3 weeks but hoping maybe after things let up i can find a linux client that supports subs/communities and maybe start contributing a few PRs or QA reports or something to the project here and there.
