cinco de mayo is a day to commemorate mexican sovereignty, BUT it is not méxico’s independence day.

the day celebrates méxico’s victory against a french invasion that occurred after méxico had already claimed independence from spain. the victorious batalla de puebla reinforced the belief that méxico could be free and autonomous.

the day gained popularity in the united states during the 1960s as it echoed the spirit of freedom that the civil rights movement fought for.

let’s use this day to celebrate the courage it takes to defend the right to choose— our right to choose self-sovereignty.
