My other excuse is that it helps relays work on scaling ahead of time before we get more users.

shouldn’t in theory everybody using their own relay?
I run the busiest relay and its not even breaking a sweat.
Premature optimization is the root of all evil. Fail fast & optimise, when it is necessary, not earlier. We are not there, not yet!
