True, but steel is not needed. Redundancy+hiding is cheaper and more reliable with laminated paper.

Depends. I hear you, tho. Most folks simply don't have the spots for redundancy.
Holes in the ground? No need to worry about metal detectors. With enough redundancy, xor, multisig etc. losing few is not an issue.
