How much is all the tungsten in Fort Knox worth?

Fort Knox currently holds approximately 147.3 million ounces of gold bullion, which equates to about 4,583 metric tons.

Gold-dipped tungsten bullion implies that the gold is only a thin coating over a tungsten core, significantly reducing the actual gold content. If we consider this scenario, the value would depend on how much actual gold is present in the coating:

Tungsten: Tungsten is much less valuable than gold, typically costing around a few dollars per pound. For the sake of this calculation, let's assume the tungsten value is negligible compared to gold.

Gold Coating: The exact amount of gold in a gold-dipped tungsten bar can vary greatly. However, for an illustrative calculation, let's assume each ounce of tungsten is coated with 0.01 ounces of gold (this is speculative since real-world thickness could vary significantly).

If we apply this to 147.3 million ounces of tungsten:

Gold content: 147,300,000 ounces * 0.01 = 1,473,000 ounces of gold.

Using the current price of gold at approximately $2,893.70 per ounce:

Value of gold: 1,473,000 ounces * $2,893.70 = $4,264,901,100

Therefore, if each of the 147.3 million ounces of tungsten were coated with just 0.01 ounces of gold, the total dollar value of the gold part would be approximately $4.26 billion. The tungsten itself would add very little to this value, so this figure largely represents the gold component. Remember, this is a very hypothetical scenario, and actual values would depend on the real thickness of the gold coating.

A little comedy speculation which I posted about earlier as well. Its not always melted to verify and one only needs to go back to the delivery in Hong Kong just over 10 years ago to see why it should be but acoustics is faster and easier to carry out quick verification
