What exactly is bitcoin???

Bitcoin is a ledger similar to what a bank would maintain, of transactions. It is maintained by people called miners who compete to write the history ("mine the next block"). Unlike your bank's ledger, it is uncensorable and unseizable, except for taking possession of your keys.
