I think the mechanisms you mentioned are generally useful for some people, personally, even as a child my own death has been a logical conclusion to my life, I certainly have strong opinions about exactly how and when I die of course, but the event has always appeared to me as the release of a coiled and tensioned string of energy into a more comfortable and natural state, as if the essence of life is released and available to gather into another consciousness, like an eddy in a flowing body of water.
