The problem is two-fold: 1. Why are we removing seemingly harmless options for node operators? And 2. Why are we implementing these changes without broad community consensus, and over very vocal opposition?

Yes, they can but imo the problem is the cultural shift we seem to see at the base layer. Do we want to fix the money or push digital fiat shitcoin casinos?
I guess the real problem, IMO, is there is so little economic activity for people actually using btc peer to peer, that stupid shit fills the gap. 'Shitcoin casinos' seem to be the only thing creating any transactions right now.
