Will the dollar be backed by bitcoin like it was backed by gold? Or will we just skip that phase and just jump straight into bitcoin as currency.

It could be, but I don't think those that control monetary policy want the kind of constraints that hard money imposes. Right now they can just print "free" money out of thin air, and line their pockets with it, fund wars, buy votes, steal elections, overthrow governments, etc.
