Thank you for your detailed response!

I now understand better why River chose to represent the graphic as such. I hope you can understand how passionate Bitcoiners are about being the sole controller of their bearer asset. And how unique that is. “Some kind of ownership” is not acceptable for a large share of us. That sacrifices a major core principle and strategic advantage of Bitcoin in a world of weak property rights.

As friendly feedback, I wish River would detail exactly what “Individuals” means on a graphic like this going forward. Or at least point to an appendix that does. Perhaps titling, “Bitcoin Investment Distribution” would be less misleading than “Ownership” language. I disagree and don’t think hot wallet means true ownership. Claim to ownership ≠ sole custodian. But maybe I’m thinking in idealistic terms rather than realistic TradFi terms in the TradFi world we’re still forced to operate in at some point.

Overall I appreciate you and River! It is important and meaningful work. I don’t mean to come off rude and overly-critical. nostr:note1vclsfndcx84yg6ajrpl5vrecj9h55zxxaut80nfkkvs28e55rmtqcpj95w

I am a Bitcoiner, I know some of us are passionate about it, I also know the vast majority of people are not.

There is only so much information you can put into a graphic before it gets too crowded. People were also suggesting to subdivide by all kinds of things, but the data just isn’t available. Sometimes simplicity is better rather than everything having their own nuanced descriptions in small font sizes.

Based on your description I’m not sure you understand what a hot wallet is. It is a wallet that is on an internet connected device. Nothing about it being internet connected makes it not in your custody, it just means that there are more attack vectors to take it from you. Lightning nodes have hot wallets for example. The “cold” part of cold storage refers to not internet connected.

You’re completely right about the hot wallet. That was my embarrassing blunder 🤦🏻‍♂️ I was stuck in the custodial exchange context I guess.
