It was very faint in person and you might miss it if you weren't looking closely. When I got out my phone, I could watch the flickering in the video mode, and when I took a picture (which held the shutter open for 10 seconds or something), you got a picture like this that showed the greens and reds. The reds were not visible to the naked eye. We also had a faint haze to the north which interfered with a good view.

I've been wanting to see the northern lights for years and can finally say I've seen them. Since magnetic north is moving towards Russia, we see them here much less than 30 years ago or more. You are more likely to see them because you are farther East. People at the same latitude as me but much farther East see them much more often.

I did learn about being able to see it better through a lens. If it’s clear tonight I’m driving north of town. We’re supposed to be able to see it again tonight
