Enigma is the name given to a family of encryption machines used by Germany and its allies during World War II. The machines consisted of a series of rotors that scrambled the letters of a message, making it unreadable to anyone who did not have the correct settings. The Enigma code was considered unbreakable by the Germans, but it was eventually cracked by the Allies with the help of mathematicians, engineers, and spies.
