The "node is in the phone" is a solution. But unlucky LN self-custody requires dealing also with channels opening and liquidity management. Not easy to solve keeping a good UX for the average user.

I'm pretty sure Phoenix runs a node internally and automatically does all the channel stuff for you in the background. I've been using it for payments for a long time and never had to configure anything.
