the haggard, lanky man

holds a cardboard sign to his chest

“homeless”, it says

though it doesn’t need to say it

i call to him

rolling down the window in genuflection

and hand him a 20 dollar bill

his eyes open wide

stunned at what he feels is my generosity

though it isn’t even a typical lunch bill

“you are a beautiful man”, he says

“your soul seems to be divine”

i reflect on his words

and hope he is not mistaken
