They’re all departments of endless pointless jobs. Just hope that doesn’t include the safety side.

Fun fact, after the end of Soviet Union, a company created a clever excavator to basically scrape of layer of top soil and sand and extract the spilled oil from it for use in an area of Azerbaijan. When they got the contract, share price rocketed as they booked millions of barrels of reserves instantly. I saw that area when driving out to a rig. Trust me, recommend keeping a few rules around

rules are useful if properly administered. but rules turn into the force of law pretty fast, which is what happened here. that's followed by regulatory capture where the govt rather than the free market picks the winners and losers.

A perennial challenge for humanity? Maybe we have the technology now to create a less corruptible governance system. Whilst I like the idea of anarchy and no rulers, one has to have rules in some ways to manage situations where incentives can create detrimental results for society. Not easy

I think so. While it is true that you can't legislate morality (that is, force people to be moral), you can remind them where their actions will adversely impact others. That's the purpose of law. I'm uneasy about include tech in that duty. While we need to restrain the human inclinations towards narcissism and greed, we still want humans involved to interpret the nuances of human behavior.

100%. My perspective coming from thinking very specifically about my industry. I would not want an unregulated oilfield. Seen enough fires and spills and shit already. The incentives are hard to align there so regulations are required
